Course Description: This course engages students in in-depth historical inquiry focusing on the people, ideas, and events that have shaped and continue to shape our nation. It allows students to examine our history through multiple perspectives and to develop empathy, interpretations, and self-knowledge for a deep understanding of American society. It develops an historic perspective for examining our nation’s history through the period of Reconstruction. This course examines, in depth, the philosophical and historical foundations of America through themes such as immigration, settlement, conflict, and democratic principles such as justice, equality, and independence.

All goals and objectives will be aligned with the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards, as well as the Common Core Standards and Strategies, to assure that all students will be College and Career Ready. These include
Historical Sources: Differentiate between primary and secondary sources, understanding the potential and limitations of each.
Historical Perspectives and Interpretations: Describe why different people may have different perspectives of the same historical event and multiple interpretations should be considered in order to avoid historical linearity and inevitability.
